About Beat-Herder
Way back in 2006, the first Beat-Herder festival was a scorcher. The land was baked like a biscuit, and 1,200 people came together to enjoy, dance, and party with unrestrained energy. The festival was far smaller then, with fewer areas and a simpler layout. Toil Trees was the epicentre of the throng. There was a tiny stage in the main field, Trailer Trash, Colin Bushrocker (still hailed as the best reggae tent in the Northern Hemisphere), a witch tent, a naked sauna, and a couple of hippy food stalls.
Since that humble beginning, Beat-Herder has grown into a colossal creation: 16 additional music areas, 14 bars, over 40 stalls, fairgrounds, and more. Mother Beat-Herder has certainly been busy.
Beat-Herder stands apart from other festivals. It is built on unconditional love and the tireless efforts of countless contributors. From plants grown from seed, hand-painted signs and flags, restored old cars, to homemade hymn books, the detail and creativity are endless. Much of what is seen at Beat-Herder exists nowhere else. Like so many of its ideas, it all begins with a crude sketch on a fag packet. A roll of brown wrapping paper is taped to a table, and words, drawings, and ideas are scrawled at random. This is exactly how the festival’s name was born twenty years ago; after hours of scrawling, the moment Beat-Herder appeared on paper, it felt unmistakably right.
Two decades on, the scribbles on fag packets and rolls of brown paper continue. They capture the names of the countless individuals, organisations, and groups who have contributed to shaping Beat-Herder. Painters, bakers, tea brewers, musicians, welders, DJs, social workers, electricians, performers… and above all, the visitors who come, love, look after, and make Beat-Herder what it is today.
