Mitski started off majoring in film at Hunter College in New York, but she changed her mind shortly after starting school and decided to focus on music. She then transferred to SUNY Purchase to study studio composition. After that, Mitski made and published her first two records, LUSH in 2012 and Retired From Sad, New Career In Business in 2013, which were the projects of her junior and senior years. For her second album and senior project, Mitski called on a 60, piece student orchestra from Hunter to back her up.
Mitski was running on fumes from the pressure of juggling college projects and her job outside of studying, but the exhaustion gave her inspiration for much of her third album, Bury Me At Makeout Creek. She made the record together with friends, at home, and it was a break from the orchestral style of her last work.
At the close of 2015, Dead Oceans, an indie label, had Mitski on their roster, and by the next year, she had new music out. Puberty 2 hit the stores in June 2016 and featured the track ‘Your Best American Girl’. A tour of North America and Europe followed The album and it was embraced by both fans and critics. The record got a slot on Rolling Stone Top 25 picks of the year, end list as well as a place on Billboards alt, rock, and indie album charts.
During this time, Mitski was the opening act for the Pixies on their US tour and also did a few gigs with Lorde on her Melodrama World Tour.
Mitski stunned the world with her fifth studio album, Be The Cowboy, and the lead single ‘Geyser’ that she dropped simultaneously on the same day without any announcement. The album was highly praised and recognized as Album of the Year by renowned music critics such as Pitchfork and Vulture in 2018.
In 2020, Mitski scored the soundtrack to the graphic novel This Is Where We Fall. The artist said the project was a fantastic challenge that led her to create music differently. The record saw a compact cassette and a limited deluxe vinyl edition release in 2021.
In October 2021, Mitski dropped ‘Working For The Knife’ and then went ahead to announce her 2022 European and North American tour. The track appeared on the 2022 album Laurel Hell, which was an 80’s synth, pop record with other songs like ‘Love Me More’ and ‘Working for the Knife’.
Subsequently, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We came out, and the critics were impressed by its emotional profundity. The album contained ‘My Love Mine All Mine, ‘ which was Mitski’s most significant commercial breakthrough mainly because of the song’s virality on social media. Through this new worldwide fan base, Mitski was raised to headliner status, leading the stage at London’s All Points East.
In 2026, Mitski finally returned with single ‘Where’s My Phone?‘ which was released before her concept album, chronicling a recluse woman enjoying the freedom of her home, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me. While touring the world and promoting the album, Mitski was the main act at the legendary Royal Albert Hall in London.
